At Last!

The World No. 5 PV Sindhu has now grabbed the title of being the first Indian woman shuttler to win a gold medal in the BWF World Championships. She is also the most successful woman shuttler to win 5 medals in 6 appearances in women’s singles. She rejoiced in her victory proudly becoming only the 4th singles player to possess a full set of world championship medals.

Until recently, her inability to win a gold had always been a juicy topic for the media. But on Sunday, August 25, 2019, it seemed that she wanted to put an end to all these debates and to slam them shut forever! The well-loved Olympic Silver Medalist finally became the World Champion that too in her own unique style!

After winning Sindhu said happily, “I dedicate this medal to my mother. It’s her birthday today.”

The Detailed Story

Sindhu had a head-on battle with the former champion Nozomi Okuhara two years back in 2017. They played each other mercilessly and that match became the longest final ever in the history of tournaments—they battled each other for full 110 minutes!

Two years back the scenario was quite different. Sindhu was pushed to her limits by the teensy-weensy Okuhara. But despite using every ounce of energy in her body, Sindhu had to accept defeat and finished second acquiring a silver.

But this time, history did not, rather could not, repeat itself! Sindhu dominated the whole court and Okuhara ran around, almost helplessly, and was unable to do anything to catch Sindhu up. The great final match was over within just 38 minutes! The jump from the former 110 minutes to 38 minutes was strikingly steep. Sindhu finished the game scoring 21-7, 21-7 leaving a baffled Okuhara in the court. A satisfying smile appeared on Sindhu’s face and she became the first Indian to bag a gold in the BWF World Championships.

What the Others Said…

Well-esteemed commentator remarked with a broad smile, “I can’t remember such a one sided final.” And he was indeed right! Earlier, Sindhu had always been reserved and defensive at the beginning of the match in most of her finals. But on this last match, she was not; her attacks gradually bloomed until it reached the climax bringing her a slamming victory!

Sindhu was praised by all from all corners of the world. Our President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted to congratulate Sindhu on her massive win. For her historic win, PV Sindhu also received praises and congratulations from Bollywood’s celebrated stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Karan Johar, and many others.

Step-by-Step Progress of the Proud Heroine

Sindhu had to hold on to a topsy-turvy boat when she was facing her long-familiar rival Tai Tzu Ying in the quarter-finals. Tai was toying with her in the first game but Sindhu’s hunger for gold made her fight back with full blow and she won the match in three games. This was the confidence boost that Sindhu needed. From that time onward, no one could stop her as she was able to conquer her biggest threat.

When Chen Yufei was blown away mercilessly in the semi-final, Sindhu was able to maintain the record of not losing to a Chinese shuttler at the World Championships. In the final, poor Okuhara faced the overwhelming rage of the Hyderabad girl and was crushed before she was able to understand what was going on!

Next comes the Tokyo Olympics. Her rivals will be warily waiting for her after acknowledging Sindhu’s thirst for the gold in Basel. Let’s wish her good luck as she heads into the Olympics as the glorified world champion!
